News: Daan Utsav at NITT

Every year, the week from Gandhi Jayanthi is celebrated as “Daan Utsav” (earlier called The Joy of Giving Week) in India. HumaNITTy, the Daan Utsav initiative of NITT, put together an array of wonderful events this year for people on campus and off campus as well. In the past week, students visited old age homes and a home for the blind located in and around the city. They also conducted programmes centered around values such as sharing and caring, for the students of many schools in Trichy. Apart from these events, planetarium visits have also been planned for the students of Thuvakudy Higher Secondary School and REC Middle School. Furthermore, funds were entrusted to Malarchi – a home supporting special chilren, to support their growth and development.

On Sunday, 9th October, Gala for Kids, a students’ cultural program was held at Barn. Children from schools and orphanages attended the event and participated in a number of competitions like Thirukural recitation, art, dance, music contests etc. As Daan Utsav draws to a close on 12th October, a few more events have been organised to celebrate and realise the happiness and satisfaction felt in giving back to the society.

Edits  : After inputs from Dr. A. K. Bakthavatsalam, the first line was edited to note that “The Joy of Giving week” is an Indian initiative and not a global one. Also, it isn’t a government initiative as described earlier but a people’s movement.

Previously : “Every year, across the globe, October commences with the celebration of The Joy Of Giving Week from the 2nd of the month. This festival of giving is celebrated by the people in India as Daan Utsav.  The Daan Utsav initiative of NITT, HumaNITTy with its organising body of students and faculty have put together an array of wonderful events for people off campus and on campus as well.”
